Ubud is where most travelers come to understand Bali rather than simply relax in it. Spread across a series of ridges and river valleys in the foothills of Gianyar, the town grew around a royal palace that has long patronized painters, carvers and dancers. Today it is a busy, creative place with galleries, yoga studios, cafes and evening dance performances, yet the village temples and family compounds behind the main streets still follow the rhythm of ceremony.
The town's reputation as an artistic center took shape in the late 1920s and 1930s, when the royal family of Ubud welcomed foreign artists such as the German painter Walter Spies, who helped bring Balinese painting and dance to international attention. That exchange gave rise to the museums and painting styles that still define the area. Around the town, carefully managed rice terraces and ancient sites such as Goa Gajah and the spring temple of Tirta Empul show how deeply water and ritual shape the landscape.
Ubud suits travelers who want culture, food, wellness and green views more than beaches. Mornings are best for walks along Campuhan Ridge or through the rice fields, before the heat and traffic build. Afternoons can be spent in museums, markets and cooking classes, and evenings at a Legong or Barong performance in a palace courtyard. Accommodation ranges from simple family homestays to jungle villas perched above the Ayung and Wos rivers, many with views over the valleys.
