Campuhan Ridge Walk & Bangkiang Sidem Fields

A grassy ridge walk from Ubud into quiet rice fields and villages

The Campuhan Ridge Walk is Ubud's best-loved stroll, a paved path of about two kilometers that follows a grassy ridge between two river valleys on the western edge of town. It leads gradually out of the busy center into open country, ending among the rice fields and small cafes of Bangkiang Sidem, where village life carries on much as it has for generations.

The walk begins near Pura Gunung Lebah, a temple at the confluence of the Wos rivers. Campuhan means confluence, and meeting points of rivers are considered spiritually powerful in Bali. Local tradition holds that the holy man Rsi Markandeya meditated here on his journey across the island, and that the area's healing plants gave Ubud its name, from ubad, meaning medicine.

From the temple, the path climbs onto the ridge, lined with tall grass and palms, with jungle falling away on both sides. There is little shade, so early morning or late afternoon is best. Beyond the ridge, the road continues through Bangkiang Sidem, where terraced paddies, farm shrines and simple warungs offer a pleasant place to rest before walking back.
