Tegenungan is one of the most visited waterfalls on Bali, and one of the easiest to reach. It lies in Kemenuh village in Gianyar, a short drive south of Ubud, and unlike most Balinese falls it sits in the lowlands rather than the mountains. A wide curtain of water pours into a pool ringed by jungle, with a viewing terrace at the top of the valley.
The falls are formed by the Petanu River, which rises in the highlands around Batur and cuts a deep green valley as it runs south to the sea. Because it drains such a large area, Tegenungan's mood changes with the weather: clear and gentle in the dry season, powerful and brown after heavy rain. Small shrines along the path are a reminder that rivers here are also sacred places.
From the entrance, stairs drop steadily down to the riverbank, where spray drifts across the rocks and, on sunny mornings, a rainbow sometimes forms in the mist. Cafes and swings line the upper rim. The climb back up is steep and humid, so pace yourself, and come early, because tour groups arrive in force by late morning.
