Nungnung is one of the most powerful waterfalls in Bali. In Pelaga village, in the Petang district of northern Badung, a heavy column of water drops around 50 meters into a rocky basin, throwing out wind and spray that soak anyone standing close. It lies in the uplands north of Ubud, well away from the main tourist circuit, and sees fewer visitors than most of the island's falls.
The village sits around 900 meters above sea level, in a cool, green landscape of farms, forest and small temples. The river feeding Nungnung drains the wet upland slopes, and the volume of water it carries makes the falls dramatic in every season and genuinely forceful after heavy rain. Mist hangs constantly in the gorge, keeping the rock walls dark with moss.
The approach is by a long concrete staircase of more than 500 steps, which is quick on the way down and slow on the way up. Near the bottom, a viewpoint and bridge bring you close to the falls. The roar is constant and the air is full of water, so expect to get wet even without swimming. Allow time to rest on the climb out.
