Pura Dalem Ped stands beside the coast road in Ped village on the north shore of Nusa Penida. It is considered one of the most sacred temples in the region, and Balinese Hindus cross from the mainland to pray here for protection from illness and misfortune. The complex is made up of several temples, which worshippers visit in a set sequence.
The temple is bound up with Ratu Gede Mecaling, a powerful and feared figure in Balinese belief. In one story he was a man who meditated at Ped and gained great powers from Shiva, becoming a lord of spirits and demons; after his death he was honored here. Pilgrims seek his protection, and the temple's anniversary is celebrated every six months over three days.
Arriving from the harbor, visitors pass through carved gates into a series of courtyards, including a garden temple with a lotus pond and a sea temple facing the strait toward Bali. The complex feels open and calm on ordinary days, filling with pilgrims in white during ceremonies. It offers a cultural counterpoint to Nusa Penida's cliffs and beaches.
