Diamond Beach

A white-sand cove reached by steps carved into the limestone cliff

Diamond Beach lies on Nusa Penida's east coast, a white-sand cove at the foot of jagged limestone cliffs with pinnacles of rock rising from the sea. Until a staircase was carved into the cliff, the beach was almost inaccessible, and it has since become one of the island's most popular spots for photos. Atuh Beach lies just around the headland.

The staircase was cut into the limestone by hand, and additional stairways have since been built alongside it. The final section is steep, with a rope for support. The beach faces the open ocean, and the waves and rip currents can be powerful. Swimming is often prohibited, and several tourists have drowned here, so visitors should stay in shallow water and heed warnings.

The descent offers sweeping views of the cove and the turquoise water below. On the sand, the cliffs rise behind you, and the rock pinnacles stand offshore. The beach is often busy with photographers, especially around midmorning. Early morning offers softer light and fewer people, before the tour groups arrive. Allow time for the climb back up, which is steeper than it looks from the sand.

Highlights

  • Steps carved into the cliff
  • White sand and turquoise water
  • Rock pinnacles offshore
  • Morning light on the cliffs

Good to know

  • Stay out of deep water, as rip currents here have caused drownings.
  • Wear shoes with grip, as the steps can be slippery.
  • Combine with Atuh Beach, just next door.
