Angel's Billabong is a natural rock pool on Nusa Penida's southwest coast, a few minutes' walk from Broken Beach. When the sea is calm and the tide is low, the pool is clear and green-blue, set into a ledge of rock above the open ocean. Its photogenic look has made it a fixture on day-trip itineraries.
The pool sits right at the edge of the sea, and large waves can wash over the ledge without warning, especially at high tide, during big swells or around the full moon. Visitors have been swept into the ocean and killed here. Strong currents beyond the ledge make rescue extremely difficult.
From the cliff above, you can see how close the pool is to the open ocean, with waves rolling in and breaking against the rocks. On calm days, the water is clear enough to see the rocky bottom. Many visitors are content to admire it from the viewing area, which is the wisest choice when the sea is anything other than flat.
