Broken Beach

A sea-cut arch encircling a hidden cove on Nusa Penida's southwest coast

Broken Beach, known locally as Pasih Uug, is a circular cove enclosed by cliffs on Nusa Penida's southwest coast, near Bunga Mekar village. The ocean flows in through a large natural arch, creating a lagoon-like basin of turquoise water ringed by limestone walls. It is one of the island's most striking natural formations, and it is best appreciated from above.

The name in Balinese means broken beach, a reference to the arch, which formed as waves eroded the limestone over a long period until the roof of a sea cave collapsed. The cove is not accessible for swimming, and there is no beach to walk on, but the surrounding cliffs and reefs are part of the Nusa Penida marine protected area, and the reefs below support a rich variety of marine life.

A path loops around the rim of the cove, offering views of the arch from different angles. Waves push through the opening and swirl around the basin, changing the colors of the water. The walk is easy but exposed, and the cliff edges are unfenced in places. Angel's Billabong lies a short walk away, making it easy to visit both together.

Highlights

  • Natural sea arch
  • Walk around the cliff rim
  • Turquoise water in the cove
  • Next to Angel's Billabong

Good to know

  • Stay back from the cliff edge, as parts of the rim are unfenced and crumbly.
  • Combine your visit with Angel's Billabong, a few minutes' walk away.
  • Visit early to avoid tour groups arriving from midmorning.
