Crystal Bay

A sheltered western bay famous for clear water and seasonal mola mola

Crystal Bay is a sheltered bay on Nusa Penida's west coast, with white sand, palm trees and clear water facing a small rocky islet. It is one of the island's few beaches with easy road access, and it is a favorite stop for snorkeling boats and dive trips, as well as for sunset on the west coast.

The bay is best known among divers for mola mola, or ocean sunfish, which rise from deep water to cleaning stations here, most often between July and October, when cold upwellings cool the water at depth. The dive site is rated advanced, as currents can be strong and shifting, and conditions can change quickly. Snorkelers should stay close to shore and watch for currents near the point.

On a calm day, the water is so clear that you can see coral and fish from the surface. Boats anchor offshore, while snorkelers explore the reef close to the beach. In the late afternoon, the bay quiets down, and the sun sets behind the islet, turning the water gold. Currents can pick up quickly here, so respect the conditions.
