Sanur Beach

A gentle, reef-protected shore where Bali's day begins with sunrise

Sanur Beach runs along Bali's southeast coast, a long stretch of pale sand facing east toward the rising sun and the islands of Nusa Penida and Lembongan. Protected by an offshore reef, the water here is calm and shallow, making Sanur one of the most relaxed beach towns on the island, popular with families, older travelers and anyone seeking a slower pace.

Sanur was one of the first places in Bali to attract foreign artists and visitors, from the 1930s onward, and it remains a residential, village-like town. The reef creates a gentle lagoon close to shore, while reef breaks further out work best in the wet season, roughly November to March, when winds blow offshore. Sanur is also the main departure point for boats to the Nusa Islands.

Mornings start early, with locals and visitors gathering on the beach to watch the sun rise over the water and the silhouette of Nusa Penida. A paved beachfront path runs past hotels, cafes and fishing boats, perfect for walking or cycling. By midday, kites drift overhead, and the calm water invites a long, lazy swim.

Highlights

  • Sunrise over the ocean
  • Calm, reef-protected lagoon
  • Beachfront path for walking or cycling
  • Boats to the Nusa Islands

Good to know

  • Come at sunrise for the best light and fewest people.
  • Rent a bicycle and explore the beachfront path.
  • Swim at high tide, as low tide exposes reef and seagrass.
