Sanur is a relaxed beach town on the southeast coast, known for calm, reef-protected water, a long seafront path and sunrise rather than sunset. It is one of Bali's oldest resort areas and attracts families, older travelers and long-term residents who prefer a gentler pace than Kuta or Canggu. It is also the main departure point for boats to Nusa Lembongan, Nusa Ceningan and Nusa Penida.
Sanur has a long history as a home to priests and artists. In the 1930s the Belgian painter Adrien-Jean Le Mayeur settled here with his wife, the Legong dancer Ni Pollok, and their beachfront home is now a museum. In 1906 Dutch troops landed on Sanur beach before marching on Denpasar, the prelude to the Badung puputan. The village is also known for its traditional healers and its active temple life.
Sanur suits families, couples, cyclists and anyone who wants calm swimming and easy walks. The beachfront path runs for several kilometers past hotels, warungs and fishing boats, and is especially pleasant at sunrise. Kite festivals fill the skies around Padang Galak in the windy months. Accommodation includes long-established beachfront hotels, small guesthouses and villas, and the town has a settled, residential feel with good restaurants and cafes.
