Sidemen

A quiet valley of rice terraces and weaving villages beneath Mount Agung

Sidemen is a rural valley in Karangasem, East Bali, where rice terraces step down toward a river beneath the slopes of Mount Agung. It is one of the best places on the island to see traditional village life with little tourism development. Visitors come to walk through the fields, watch the weavers at work and enjoy the views of Bali's highest volcano, which rises to 3,031 meters.

The valley is known for its handwoven textiles, including songket, woven with metallic threads, and endek ikat cloth, both used in ceremonies and temple dress. Small workshops in the village still use traditional looms. The terraces are irrigated by the subak system, and ceremonies at water temples mark the farming calendar. Many families in the valley still combine farming with weaving, and the two crafts share the rhythm of the seasons and the temple calendar.

Sidemen suits travelers who want peace, walking and countryside rather than beaches and nightlife. Mornings are best for walks through the terraces, when the air is clear and Mount Agung is most likely to be visible. Accommodation consists of small guesthouses and boutique villas with views over the fields, many with simple restaurants of their own. Evenings are quiet, with the sound of frogs and water channels rather than music.
