Seminyak Beach

A long, polished beachfront of sunset bars and open-ocean waves

Seminyak Beach is part of the long, unbroken sweep of sand that runs north from Kuta, and it is the most polished section of it. Boutique hotels, beach clubs and restaurants line the shore, and the beach is a natural gathering place at sunset, when colorful beanbags and umbrellas appear on the sand and the western sky fills with color.

Seminyak grew from a quiet village into one of Bali's most fashionable areas from the 1990s onward, but beach temples such as Pura Petitenget remain active, and ceremonies still take place on the sand. The ocean here is open and powerful. Beach-break waves can suit surfers of varying abilities depending on the day, but rips are frequent, and swimmers should treat the water with caution.

By day, the beach is relaxed, with walkers, surfers and vendors moving along the waterline. As evening approaches, the mood shifts. Music drifts from the beach clubs, the sand fills with people waiting for sunset, and the sky glows over the Indian Ocean. Walking the shoreline north toward Petitenget or south toward Legian is one of the simplest pleasures here.

Highlights

  • Sunset on beanbags by the water
  • Pura Petitenget on the shore
  • Long beach walks to Legian or Petitenget
  • Beach clubs and seafront dining

Good to know

  • Swim only between the red-and-yellow flags where lifeguards are posted.
  • Walk to the beach at sunset rather than driving, as traffic in Seminyak is slow.
  • Keep valuables close on busy evenings.
