Balangan Beach stretches along the northwestern edge of the Bukit Peninsula, a strip of pale sand below limestone cliffs. It has long drawn surfers for its left-hand reef break, and it offers fewer crowds and more space than many beaches nearby. Simple warungs and guesthouses line the sand, and the clifftop offers wide views up the coast toward Jimbaran.
The wave at Balangan peels left over a shallow reef. On smaller days it is a fun, workable wave for intermediate surfers, while bigger swells bring faster, more critical sections for experienced riders. At low tide the reef sits close to the surface, which makes timing important. The calmer inside water at higher tide can be suitable for a careful swim.
From the cliff, the beach looks almost untouched, a long curve of sand and turquoise water. Down below, the mood is relaxed, with surfers waxing boards, sunbathers spread out and the smell of grilled fish coming from the warungs. In the late afternoon the cliffs turn amber and the sun sets directly over the water.
