Nyang Nyang Beach

A long, wild beach at the foot of a steep cliff path

Nyang Nyang Beach is a long, wild stretch of white sand on the southern coast of the Bukit Peninsula, south of Uluwatu. It sits below high limestone cliffs and is reached by a steep path from the top, which keeps many visitors away and leaves the beach with a sense of space rare in southern Bali.

The beach has remained largely undeveloped, with only a few simple warungs. It faces the open Indian Ocean, and the waves can be powerful, breaking over reef in places. There are no lifeguards, and currents can be strong, so swimming should be approached with care, especially at higher tides or bigger swells. Low tide reveals reef flats and rock pools.

The walk down is steep and exposed, with little shade, but the reward is a wide, open beach that can feel almost empty. The sand stretches far in both directions, backed by green cliffs, and the sound of the surf fills the air. Bring water and give yourself time to enjoy the solitude before tackling the climb back up.

Highlights

  • Reef flats at low tide

Good to know

  • Bring plenty of water and sun protection, as the path has little shade.
