Green Bowl Beach

A secluded cove reached by hundreds of steep steps

Green Bowl Beach is a small, secluded cove on the southern edge of the Bukit Peninsula in Ungasan. Reached by hundreds of steep steps down the cliff, it rewards the effort with clear water, a small strip of sand and limestone cliffs on all sides. It is one of the quieter beaches in the south.

Green Bowl is known among surfers for a right-hand reef break with a deep inside bowl, which can barrel on bigger swells. It suits intermediate to advanced surfers, and currents can be strong, particularly on an outgoing tide. At the base of the cliffs, caves shelter visitors from the sun, and the beach is at its widest at low tide.

The walk down is long but scenic, through greenery and past views of the coast below. On the sand, the cove feels secluded, and the water shifts from turquoise to deep blue over the reef. Low tide reveals rock pools and reef flats, while high tide can cover most of the beach. The climb back up is a workout.
