Melasti Beach

Turquoise water at the foot of towering limestone cliffs

Melasti Beach lies on the southern coast of the Bukit Peninsula in Ungasan, reached by a road that cuts down through towering limestone cliffs. The beach is a stretch of white sand at the base of the cliffs, with clear turquoise water that makes it one of the most photographed beaches in southern Bali. It is easy to reach by car, which sets it apart from the stair-access coves nearby.

The beach was long accessible only to a few, but the road through the cliffs opened it to wider tourism, and today it has beach clubs, warungs and parking at the bottom. The name Melasti refers to the Balinese purification ritual held at the sea before Nyepi, the Day of Silence, and local communities continue to hold ceremonies on the shore.

Driving down the cliff road reveals the full scale of the limestone walls, before the beach opens up below. On the sand, the cliffs rise almost vertically behind you, and the water shifts from pale turquoise to deep blue. At low tide, reef flats appear, while calmer days can be good for a careful swim. Late afternoon brings soft light to the cliffs.
