Padang Padang Beach

A small cove reached through a rock passage, home to a world-class barrel

Padang Padang is a small, sheltered cove on the Bukit Peninsula, reached by a staircase and a narrow passage between limestone rocks. Locally known as Pantai Labuan Sait, it is one of Bali's most famous beaches, both for its picture-book setting and for a left-hand barrel that is regarded as one of the best waves in the world when conditions line up.

The main break, sometimes called the Balinese Pipeline, breaks hard over shallow reef and is strictly for expert surfers. Just along the coast, a mellower right known as Padang Rights, or Baby Padang, is popular with less experienced surfers. The beach gained wider fame after appearing in the 2010 film Eat Pray Love, and it has hosted the Rip Curl Cup.

Coming down through the rocks, the cove suddenly opens in front of you, with white sand, clear water and surfers on the outer reef. It can get crowded around midday, with people and the beach's resident monkeys competing for space. Arriving early allows you to enjoy the quiet, while big-swell days bring a crowd of onlookers to watch expert surfers.

Highlights

  • Rock passage down to the cove
  • World-class left barrel for experts
  • Baby Padang for less experienced surfers
  • Clear, calm water on small days

Good to know

  • Leave the main left to experts and try Baby Padang if you are still improving.
  • Keep food and sunglasses out of sight, as monkeys grab belongings.
  • Arrive before 9 a.m. to find space on the small beach.
