Echo Beach

Canggu's westernmost surf beach, known for reef waves and long sunsets

Echo Beach, known locally as Pantai Batu Mejan, is the westernmost of Canggu's main beaches, just before the coast runs on to Pererenan. It is one of the area's best-known surf spots, with waves breaking over reef and rock rather than sand, and its seafront has filled with restaurants and bars that look straight out at the lineup. At sunset the whole strip turns to face the water.

The beach takes its local name from Pura Batu Mejan, one of the old temples along this coast attributed to the revered priest Dang Hyang Nirartha, who traveled Bali's shores in the sixteenth century. The surf is the main draw for visitors: a fast right and a left peel over a shallow reef and rocky bottom, suiting intermediate to advanced surfers rather than beginners, especially when the swell is up.

Standing on the rocks at the water's edge, you watch surfers pick off waves only a short paddle away. The sand is dark and partly strewn with rock, so this is more a place to watch and eat than to lie out with a towel. Evenings bring a steady crowd, music drifting from the bars, and fishermen casting from the rocks as the light fades.

Highlights

  • Reef break surf for experienced riders
  • Front-row sunset from the rocks
  • Pura Batu Mejan nearby
  • Lively seafront dining

Good to know

  • Wear reef booties or sandals on the rocks, which are sharp and slippery.
  • Swimming here is not recommended because of the reef, rocks and currents.
  • Arrive before sunset to find parking, which fills quickly in the evening.
