Munduk is a mountain village perched on a ridge in the northern highlands, above the twin lakes of Buyan and Tamblingan. Surrounded by forest, clove and coffee plantations and terraced fields, it is one of the best places in Bali for walking and waterfall hikes. Cool air, mist and wide views over the hills to the north coast give it a calm, restorative atmosphere.
During the Dutch colonial period, Munduk became a center for coffee and clove growing, and some colonial-era houses survive in the village. The forests around Lake Tamblingan are protected and hold ancient temples, some reached only on foot or by traditional canoe. The surrounding communities maintain strong traditions of temple ceremonies connected to the lakes, which are considered sacred sources of water for the farms below.
Munduk suits hikers, nature lovers and slow travelers who want quiet days in the mountains. Trails lead to waterfalls such as Munduk, Melanting and Banyumala, and to viewpoints over the lakes. Canoe trips on Lake Tamblingan with local guides are a peaceful way to see the forested shore. Accommodation consists of small guesthouses, eco-lodges and boutique villas with views across the valleys. Evenings are cool and quiet.
