Bedugul is a cool highland area in central Bali, set around Lake Beratan in an old volcanic caldera. At an altitude of over 1,200 meters, it offers misty mornings, pine forests, strawberry farms and vegetable markets. Its best-known sight is Pura Ulun Danu Beratan, a temple whose shrines appear to float on the lake, one of the most photographed places in Bali.
Pura Ulun Danu Beratan is dedicated to Dewi Danu, the goddess of the lake, and is closely linked to the irrigation that sustains rice farming in the region, since the lake feeds springs and rivers below. Nearby, the Bali Botanic Garden, established in 1959, preserves highland plant species and offers forest walks. The Candikuning market sells fruit, vegetables, spices and flowers grown in the surrounding fields.
Bedugul suits travelers who want a cool break from the coast, gardens, lakes and easy walks. Most visitors come on a day trip combined with Jatiluwih or Munduk, but staying overnight lets you see the lake in the quiet of early morning. Accommodation is mostly simple hotels and guesthouses, with a few lakeside lodges. Weather changes quickly, and afternoon mist and rain are common, especially in the wet season.
