Kintamani

A highland ridge overlooking Mount Batur's caldera and crater lake

Kintamani is a highland district on the rim of a vast caldera, looking down on Mount Batur and the crescent-shaped Lake Batur. At around 1,500 meters, it is cooler than the coast, and the views of the active volcano and its dark lava fields are among the most striking in Bali. Most visitors come for the sunrise trek up Mount Batur, which rises to 1,717 meters.

Mount Batur is an active volcano that has erupted many times in recorded history, and black lava flows from its eruptions still scar the caldera floor. Lake Batur is Bali's largest lake and is considered sacred; it feeds springs and irrigation across much of the island. Pura Ulun Danu Batur, one of Bali's most important temples, honors the goddess of the lake. On the eastern shore lies Trunyan, a Bali Aga village with distinctive traditions.

Kintamani suits hikers, photographers and travelers who enjoy cool air and big landscapes. The sunrise trek starts in darkness and reaches the summit in time to watch the sky light up over Mount Agung and Mount Abang. Afterward, hot springs on the lakeshore are a welcome rest. Accommodation ranges from simple lodges near the lake to hotels and cafes along the caldera rim, many with sweeping views across the crater.

Good to know

  • Bring a warm layer, as early mornings on the rim and summit can be cold.
  • Book the Batur trek with a registered local guide, as is customary on the mountain.
  • Stay overnight in the area to avoid a very early drive from the south.
