Munduk Waterfalls (Red Coral & Melanting)

A chain of forest waterfalls linked by trails around Munduk village

The hills around Munduk hold a series of waterfalls that can be linked on a half-day walk. The best known are Red Coral, a tall single drop with a narrow but powerful stream, and Melanting, further along the valley near the village of the same name. Between them lie Labuhan Kebo and, nearby, Golden Valley. Together they make Munduk one of the best waterfall-walking areas on Bali.

Munduk sits on a ridge in the northern highlands, near the old caldera that holds Lake Tamblingan. Clove, coffee and cacao gardens cover the slopes, and streams from the misty uplands cut steep, west-facing valleys on their way down. The Dutch once used this cool area as a retreat from the heat of Singaraja, and some colonial-era houses still stand in the village.

Red Coral is reached by a mostly concrete path of about 650 meters from the main road, taking around 20 minutes each way. From there, trails continue through plantations and forest toward Labuhan Kebo and Melanting. Expect damp air, birdsong, occasional village shrines and plenty of mud after rain. A local guide makes it easy to string the falls together without backtracking.

Highlights

  • Red Coral's tall single drop
  • Melanting and Labuhan Kebo on the same trail
  • Clove and coffee plantations en route
  • Cool, misty highland walking

Good to know

  • Hire a local guide in Munduk to link the falls in a single walk.
  • Download an offline map before you go, as signal and signage are patchy.
  • Small entrance fees apply at individual falls, so carry cash.
