Banyumala Twin Waterfall

Twin falls and a clear, cold pool in the hills above Lake Buyan

Banyumala is a pair of waterfalls in Wanagiri, in the highlands above Lake Buyan. Two main streams, joined by many smaller threads of water, pour down a mossy cliff about 36 meters high into a wide, clear pool. It is one of the most beautiful falls in the Munduk and Bedugul area, and the cool mountain setting makes it feel very different from the lowland falls near Ubud.

The falls sit in a deep, shaded canyon on the forested slopes of the old caldera that also holds Lakes Buyan and Tamblingan. Water from these misty hills feeds the rivers flowing north toward the coast, and the area receives frequent rain and cloud. The result is a lush, green ravine of ferns and hanging vines, with water that stays cold year-round.

A trail of roughly a kilometer drops from the ticket booth to the falls, mostly on stairs and paved paths, with a few muddy natural stretches. At the bottom, small bridges cross the stream and the pool spreads out beneath the falls, mostly waist to chest deep. Swimming here is cold and bracing. The walk back up is steady, so allow about an hour overall.

Highlights

  • Twin falls about 36 meters high
  • Clear, cold swimming pool
  • Shaded fern-filled canyon
  • Close to Lake Buyan and Munduk

Good to know

  • Pack a towel and a warm layer; the water and air are cold at this altitude.
  • Wear shoes with grip, as the lower path gets muddy after rain.
  • Combine with the Twin Lakes viewpoints on the same morning.
