Lovina

Calm black-sand beaches and dawn dolphin trips on the north coast

Lovina is a quiet stretch of beach villages along Bali's north coast, west of the city of Singaraja. It is known for black-sand beaches, calm seas and early-morning boat trips to see dolphins. Life here is slower and more local than in the south, and Lovina makes a good base for exploring the waterfalls, hot springs and temples of North Bali.

The north coast has a distinct history. Singaraja was the Dutch colonial capital of Bali and an important port, and the region shows influences from traders and settlers from other parts of the archipelago. Near Lovina lie the Banjar hot springs and Brahmavihara-Arama, Bali's largest Buddhist monastery, set on a hillside with views to the sea. Inland, waterfalls such as Gitgit and Aling-Aling are easily reached.

Lovina suits travelers who want calm water, a slower pace and an affordable base in the north. Dolphin trips leave before dawn on traditional boats, and snorkeling is possible on nearby reefs. Afternoons can be spent at waterfalls or soaking in the Banjar hot springs. Accommodation is mostly small hotels, guesthouses and a few beachfront resorts. Evenings are quiet, with sunset seafood at simple restaurants along the shore.
