Pemuteran is a small village on Bali's northwest coast, set between forested hills and a calm bay. It is known for snorkeling and diving, a community reef restoration project and easy access to Menjangan Island, one of Bali's best-known dive sites. Far from the busy south, it attracts divers, nature lovers and travelers who want a peaceful seaside stay.
The reef around Pemuteran was badly damaged by destructive fishing and coral bleaching, and in the early 2000s the community began working with scientists on a Biorock reef restoration project, using low-voltage electrical structures to encourage coral growth. Local people help protect the reefs, and the project has been widely recognized. Nearby West Bali National Park protects forests, mangroves and the endangered Bali starling.
Pemuteran suits divers, snorkelers and couples looking for quiet days and natural scenery. Boats leave for Menjangan Island in the morning, where steep reef walls drop into deep water. Closer to shore, the Biorock structures can be explored on a snorkel. The village has a handful of boutique resorts, dive lodges and guesthouses along the beach, and evenings are calm, with sunsets over the hills of East Java.
