Pemuteran Beach

A calm northwest bay known for one of the world's largest reef restoration projects

Pemuteran Beach lies on Bali's northwest coast in Buleleng, a quiet bay of dark sand and calm water backed by dry hills. It is known for snorkeling and diving, with healthy reefs close to shore and easy access to Menjangan Island in West Bali National Park, one of Bali's best-known dive sites. The village has grown slowly, and it still feels far removed from the busier south.

Pemuteran's reefs were damaged by destructive fishing and coral bleaching in the 1990s. In 2000, Wolf Hilbertz and Tom Goreau began a Biorock reef restoration project here, using low-voltage electric currents to encourage coral growth on steel structures. The project, supported by the local community, has become one of the largest of its kind in the world.

Snorkeling from the beach, you pass over coral-covered structures and schools of fish in calm, clear water. The village is quiet, with a few guesthouses and dive shops. In the evening, the sun sets behind the hills, and the bay glows in the soft light. Pemuteran is a place to slow down and spend time in the water.
