Bali lies just south of the equator, so it is warm all year and the real difference is rainfall. The dry season runs roughly from April to October, bringing sunny days, lower humidity and the best conditions for trekking, diving off the north and east coasts and surfing on the west coast. The wet season, from about November to March, brings heavy afternoon or evening downpours, higher humidity and greener landscapes, though many days still have long dry spells.
Crowds follow holidays more than weather. July and August are the busiest months, with families from Europe and Australia, and the weeks around Christmas and New Year see prices and traffic peak. Chinese New Year, Indonesian school holidays and the Idul Fitri period also bring large numbers of domestic and regional travelers. April to June and September to October are often the sweet spot: mostly dry, slightly quieter and easier to book.
Plan around Nyepi, the Balinese Day of Silence that marks the Saka New Year in March. For 24 hours, from 6 a.m. to 6 a.m., the whole island stops: the airport closes, roads empty, and visitors must stay inside their hotels with lights low. The evening before, villages parade giant ogoh-ogoh effigies through the streets. In 2027, Nyepi falls on Monday, March 8, according to Indonesia's official national holiday calendar, though dates should be confirmed nearer the time.
Weather also varies by altitude and region. The central highlands around Bedugul, Munduk and Kintamani are noticeably cooler, especially at night, and often cloudy or misty in the afternoon. The north coast around Lovina tends to be drier than the south, while the east can be windy. Wet-season rain makes some trails and waterfalls slippery and can disrupt boat crossings to the Nusa Islands and Lombok, so allow extra days if traveling between November and March.
