After landing at Ngurah Rai you walk to immigration, where officers check your passport, visa and arrival details. If you bought an e-VOA and completed the All Indonesia arrival card in advance, the process is usually quick. Travelers buying a Visa on Arrival at the counter join a separate queue first, which can be long when several wide-body flights land together in the evening.
After baggage claim comes customs, where your All Indonesia QR code covers the declaration. If you plan to use an Indonesian SIM card for more than 90 days, this is also where the customs desk registers phone IMEIs. Once through the doors you enter a busy arrivals area with drivers holding name boards, taxi counters, SIM and money-changer kiosks, and plenty of offers of transport. Take a moment to get your bearings before agreeing to anything.
You have three good options for the onward journey. Pre-booked hotel or private transfers meet you in the arrivals hall. Official airport taxis are booked at counters just outside arrivals at a fixed fare to your area. Grab and Gojek also operate legally at the airport, with marked pickup zones and lounges; follow the signs for online taxi pickup rather than meeting a driver on the curb. Avoid unlicensed touts who approach you inside the terminal.
Distances in south Bali are short, but traffic is heavy and unpredictable. As a rough guide, Nusa Dua and Jimbaran take 20 to 40 minutes, Seminyak 30 to 60 minutes, Uluwatu 45 to 75 minutes, Canggu 45 minutes to 1.5 hours, and Ubud 1 to 2 hours. Late evenings, weekends and holiday periods can stretch those times considerably. For an early flight home, leave generous margin: the roads around the airport and Simpang Siur junction regularly jam.
Quick tips
- Pre-book a transfer if you land late at night
- Follow 'online taxi' signs for Grab and Gojek pickups
- Use official taxi counters, not touts in the hall
- Withdraw a little cash at a bank ATM in arrivals
- Register your phone IMEI at customs if staying over 90 days
- Leave extra time for the trip back to the airport
Good to know
- Have your hotel address saved offline in case your phone has no data on arrival.
- Allow at least three hours for international departures, including the drive.
