Lembongan Mangrove Forest

Quiet channels through a mangrove forest on Lembongan's northeast coast

The Lembongan Mangrove Forest lines Nusa Lembongan's northeast coast, a maze of channels and roots covering roughly 200 hectares. It is one of the island's most peaceful places, a contrast to the beaches and dive sites, and visitors explore it by traditional boat, canoe or kayak, gliding through the quiet waterways under a low green canopy.

The mangroves protect the coast from erosion, provide habitat for fish and birds, and act as a nursery for marine life. They fall within the Nusa Penida marine protected area, and local communities help manage them. Boat tours are run by local operators, and snorkeling trips sometimes stop at the edge of the forest, where the water is clear and calm.

Paddling through the channels, you hear birdsong and the gentle lap of water against the roots. The light filters through the leaves, and the water reflects the green canopy. At high tide, boats can venture deeper into the forest, while low tide exposes the roots and mudflats. The experience is calm and unhurried, and it makes a gentle counterpoint to a morning in the surf or on a dive boat.
