Devil's Tear is a stretch of jagged rock on Nusa Lembongan's southwest coast, near Dream Beach, where waves surge into a cave and explode upward in towering plumes of spray. On sunny days, the spray creates rainbows over the rocks, and the site has become one of the island's most popular spots for sunset, drawing a crowd every evening.
The power of the waves is the attraction, but it is also the danger. Sudden waves can knock people off their feet and drag them into the sea, and serious injuries and deaths have been reported here. The rock is sharp, and the cliff edges are unprotected. Visitors should keep well back from the edge and never turn their backs to the ocean.
Standing at a safe distance, you feel the boom of the waves through the rock and see the spray rise high into the air. In the late afternoon, the light turns gold, and the spray catches the sun. Rock pools nearby reflect the sky. The site can get crowded at sunset, so arrive early to find a safe spot.
