West Bali

Bali's wild west, with a national park, surf beaches and the ferry to Java

West Bali is the least developed part of the island, a region of forested hills, quiet beaches and small towns that runs from Tabanan to the ferry port of Gilimanuk. It is home to West Bali National Park, the long left-hand surf break at Medewi and the regency of Jembrana. For travelers, it offers nature, surf and a sense of space rarely found elsewhere in Bali.

West Bali National Park protects forests, savanna, mangroves and coral reefs, as well as Menjangan Island offshore. It is the last wild home of the endangered Bali starling, the island's endemic bird. Jembrana is known for makepung, traditional buffalo races in which pairs of buffalo pull small chariots, and for jegog, a gamelan made of giant bamboo. The region also has strong Muslim and Christian communities alongside its Hindu villages.

West Bali suits surfers, divers, hikers and travelers passing overland to Java. Medewi offers a long, gentle wave and a quiet village atmosphere, while the national park can be explored with guided treks and boat trips. Accommodation is scattered and includes surf lodges, beach bungalows and a few eco-resorts near the park. Distances are long and facilities limited, so it rewards those who plan ahead.

Highlights

  • Surfing the left-hand point at Medewi
  • West Bali National Park treks
  • Menjangan Island diving
  • Makepung buffalo races in Jembrana

Good to know

  • Hire an official guide to trek inside West Bali National Park.
  • Fill up on fuel and cash in larger towns, as services are limited.
  • Combine West Bali with Pemuteran for a longer northwest loop.
