Balinese Hinduism

The island's living faith, woven through every home, field and village

Balinese Hinduism, known formally as Agama Hindu Dharma, is the religion of the great majority of Bali's people and the thread that runs through daily life on the island. It shapes how villages are organized, how houses are built, how rice is grown and how time is counted. For visitors, it is the reason for the temples on every corner, the offerings on the pavement and the processions that stop traffic.

The faith blends Hindu and Buddhist traditions that arrived from India by way of Java with much older local beliefs in ancestors and the spirits of nature. Followers recognize one supreme God, Sang Hyang Widhi Wasa, who is worshipped through many manifestations, including the Hindu trinity of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. Balance between good and evil forces is central, which is why offerings are made both to the gods above and to the spirits below.

Most of the faith is lived rather than preached. Families pray at shrines in their house compounds, villages maintain a set of temples for different purposes, and the year is filled with ceremonies tied to the moon, the 210-day calendar and the life cycle. Visitors are welcome to watch many of these rituals respectfully. Even a short stay reveals how closely belief, art and community are bound together in Bali.
